[Indie-review] EGX Brimingham 2016

Before you lose yourself I know that the title has an overwhelming obvious typo in it but I think this is totally acceptable when you check out the picture below!

Now with that’s over with let us overview EGX this year and the games I feel are worth your time

“the absence of the likes of Xbox, Nintendo and even Ubisoft was really noticeable”

The Event

The venue was once again at NEC Birmingham (see I can spell) and this year there was really a lack of something, in my mind this was a ‘Triple A’ presence, now I know you will be like “but Noaksey aren’t you all about Indie titles?” well rest assure I am and that’s not going to change but the absence of the likes of Xbox, Nintendo and even Ubisoft was really noticeable and while I want the indies to be covered and found that is exactly what Rezzed is for. This is EGX the largest UK games expo and where I would expect a large ‘Triple A’ presence and booming stages and themed floor stands with fans screaming for giveaways and chaos over lanyards. This year I only ever really see two major hype generators and these where the Destiny (Playstation 4 game) stand within the Virgin Media stage and the Playstation stage, I literally never really see any other Tornado (EGX’s official energy drink) fueled ‘Triple A’ fan pumping madness which was very weird.

The Games

Standing at the forefront of the game available this year were the Indies, with such a wealth of availability it was amazing that indies where the first things you saw upon entering the venue, this meant a lot of the stands where always busy and if you were just in one of those 2- 3 hours queues for the handful of games on offer there was always an indie game to find and play!

Here are the games I feel you need to check out, of course in no particular order!

My Rezzed Collection 10 games that stood out

Black The Fall

An atmospheric puzzle game set-up in a communist dystopian era. Playing as Black, an obedient factory worker, you get one chance to outsmart the oppressive system, but the road to freedom is paved with puzzles, pitfalls and manipulation. A door malfunctions, an opportunity arises. Once out, what will you do to survive?

A game about building a bigger, better ship whilst blasting your buddies’ to bits (and shouting about it). It is a local multiplayer party/arena game and challenges you to strike the right balance between speed, power, maneuverability, and of course fun 🙂

Conga Master

A ridiculously fun conga dancing arcade game cut, rock-out or boogie your way to victory in this title.

Dad Quest

Play as a Dad, and use your child as a weapon of mass destruction and then level up into the ultimate weapon!

Dead Cells

A roguelike, Castlevania-inspired, action-platformer, Dead Cells allows you to explore a sprawling, ever-changing castle, unlock new gear and gain access to unreachable areas. Fight to the death using the weapons and loot you find during each run, slowly building your strength as you battle across infinite procedurally assembled combinations of meticulously handcrafted levels. Every run is unique: a new castle, new secrets, randomised loot and different characters – every time a step into the unknown. Dead Cells is pretty much the first Roguevania game, ever…

Perfect Universe – Play with Gravity

Perfect Universe is a collection of 9 gravity inspired games. Featuring 6 hilarious local multiplayer modes and over 70 eye-popping single player levels, this captivating universe has something for everyone.

Snake Pass

A physical action-puzzle game that sees the player slither, curl and climb their way through increasingly challenging worlds filled with evermore intricate obstacles and fiendishly mind-bending objectives!

She Remembered Caterpillars

Lovely colourful puzzle game mixing interesting challenging puzzles with beautiful art and characters.

The Adventure Pals

Take challenging yet exciting platforming, mix liberally with ridiculous big boss battles, slather on some RPG-style towns and exploration, and you’re on the right track! This time, the player is out to rescue dear old Papa, who’s going to be turned into a hotdog by the nefarious Mr. B unless you can stop him.

Across more than five vast and beautiful game worlds, Yooka and Laylee will use their arsenal of special moves to tackle a huge variety of puzzles and platforming challenges in search of Pagies, the golden bounty used to unlock – and expand – new playgrounds, each jammed to the gills with oddball characters and hulking bosses. The magical Pagies will assist the buddy-duo in their ultimate mission to thwart corporate creep Capital B and his devious scheme to absorb all of the world’s books… and convert them into pure profit.

Three note worthy games from The Leftfield Collection

A dieselpunk action game about a young woman, who flies her airplane and catches skyfish among beautiful sky islands. Amelias biggest dream is to reach the stratosphere and to bring down the legendary Skywhale, which promises riches and fame for a lifetime.

Flat Heroes

A fast paced fun brutal game about surviving an onslaught of attacks increasing in difficulty and brutality as the game progresses.

Pikuniku is an absurd puzzle-exploration game that takes place in a strange but playful environment.
The player must rebuild a community by helping the Worry people confront their fears.
