GEEK Logo Cosplay 1080

The other main reason I came to GEEK 2014 was because of the cosplay masquerade,

Cosplay photography is something I am just really just getting into and I am trying (really trying) to snap as many gaming characters as I can, though, they are not the only photos I will take, but I digress.

This year saw the first in the history of GEEK to have a Cosplay Award so I was quite excited to see how much effort people would put in to gain this award.

The event was hosted by Zonic Cosplays (Zonic being a gaming themed entertainer), which I think is a new venture due to a load of mistakes and clearly being nervous but still let’s continue.

The event was being chaired by four professional cosplayers. Now they were introduced but why exactly they were picked to be judges or what actual accreditation they had towards being judges if I wasn’t already aware of these cosplayers, I as the audience, wouldn’t know.

The judges were SarahKawaii, Kelly JeanTigerLily Cosplay & Chiquitita cosplay

The categories were Best Skit (skits tend to be a single dramatized joke (thanks Wiki!)), Best Group and Best overall cosplay.

Now all the following pictures and video were taken by me and I’ll be giving them a rating and final comments and these are my opiniosn and are open to further discussion so feel free to leave your comments below.

I’ll try to keep them in order but some pictures were bad due to the cosplayers hurried attitude to getting it over with- maybe they were nervous or something?

First up was Zonic herself, cosplaying as Chell (Portal) she was demonstrating the cosplay posing points and moving on

Here is her cosplay…

Note the X’s on the ground. These are the points that the cosplayers need to stop to pose for 3 seconds then the next one, then, new pose and when I say pose I mean actually stand still!

Now on to the main contestants

‘The Engineer’ from Team Fortress 2

This guy was very quick across the points and it was very hard to snap him this is the best picture out of a bad bunch.

Rating 6 out of 10

Next was a group entry

Pokemon Troup

These guys did put a lot of effort into their attire the only thing that ruins it is the Pika-boy in the onesie (try to ignore the holes)

Next is a Skit

Geek 2014 – Margate 128 by Noaksey

This was clearly taken and is a direct Skit from Monty Python’s ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ the only difference is the Lead Knight is Sonic the Hedgehog

The cosplayers are good and the costumes well constructed, the Skit is dull.

Lan Fan from Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

This costume was very good, granted not an original gaming character but a good cosplay. Sadly she was unsure of her self and had a tenancy to keep moving. Afterwards she stated “I didn’t want to stay on the stage too long because the organiser had played the wrong backing track.”

Rating 7 out of 10

Riza Hawkeye from Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

This is the best shot I got from the show of her, but again she was in a rush to get off stage because as the cosplayer before her the organiser got the wrong track music.

Geek 2014 – Margate 136 by Noaksey

‘The Sniper’ and ‘The Spy’ Team Fortress 2

These two pretty much did this their skit exactly how it should be done. Sadly with cheaply brought costumes they lacked here but still it was awkwardly good.. right?

Rating 6 out of 10

Geek 2014 – Margate 137 by Noaksey

Here is another Skit, sadly the characters names etc escape me right now.

This was the funniest one for me, but only because it’s a very awkward skit altogether!

Rating 6 out of 10

Mystique from X-Men

Completely dressed in black with a blue face, not much to it, Not great not bad just ..

Rating 4 out of 10

‘The Scout’ from Team Fortress 2

Seems to be a very easy cosplay to do, not much to think about, just the colours ?

Rating 5 out of 10

Pain (Yahiko) From Naruto Shippuden

Bought costume, even the nose studs all bought, a good cosplay, but is made to be good.

5 our of 10

Poison Ivy From DC Universe

This one has me at a loss it looks bought but I don’t think it is, it a very well put together cosplay. I like this one, but mainly because she actually posed!

Geek 2014 – Margate 168 by Noaksey

Batman From DC Universe

This is a brought out fit no effort man, and funny for all the wrong reasons.

Geek 2014 – Margate 169 by Noaksey

Ratman From Portal

Even though you never really get to see Ratman this is a terrible cosplay, and being the shortest ‘skit’ made no sense, why did he bother?

0 out of 10

‘The Doll Woman’ From Condemned 2: Bloodshot

This is cosplay, home made costume correctly reflecting the character they are portraying. Good good good…

The Last entry was this little guy

‘Jack’ From Minecraft

Self made character this kid loves minecraft, and stuff.

Once every one had been and gone then came the results.

Here is all the judges they made the choices

Honourable mention first

Best Skit

Best Group

and the winner of the GEEK Cosplay Award 2014 is

Robyn Spanton

The winner herself was not expecting to win this hence this amazing look =D

In the end I got a few better more posed pictures (which other photographers got involved in)

These can be found on both Flickr and Facebook.
